We’ve upgraded and moved from Blogger

Hi fans,
Just a quick note to let you know that we have moved from our Blogger blog. It was just way to confining. We are now on a self-hosted Word Press Blog and hopefully, we will have a lot more flexibility!

I got no leash on me

I run with this one dog who loves to walk. When his owner grabs the leash, he jumps up and down, gets all excited about going for a walk.

He gets the leash clipped on his collar and he pulls on the lease the entire way. But, when his owner lets go of the lease in the middle of the walk, he just stops.

“You can run,” I tell him! But, he doesn’t.

“The leash is on me,” he says, “where could I possibly go?”

I don’t walk with a leash, much to the angst of the Englewood police department. They stop us every few weeks and ask us if we are on a leash. Since the statute doesn’t technically require it, I never get a ticket. But, they still try.

I know I could run at any time. I would not starve nor get cold because I can hunt food and find shelter anywhere. I am still a dog.

I choose to stay with my owner cause he is a really cool guy, loves me to death and edits my blog. (I make a lot of typos cause I have no thumbs.. hard to hit the space bar.) He chooses to stay with me for all sorts of reasons, mostly cause I’m there for him as well. Because he doesn’t put a leash on me, I am free to sniff the neighbors bushes, pee on any tree I want, dally over a smelly something on the sidewalk; things we dogs NEED. And he understands that.

But, I always come back to walk at his side. Not because he attaches me to a leash, but because I choose it.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg??? I have the answer.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg… I HAVE the answer to that eternal question and it is the form of a story. Ready??

About 5 years ago, I flew in and out of CIncinnati for a puppy conference and a friend of mind came to pick me up from the airport on a Sunday morning. Being a good friend back, I treated him to breakfast and we stopped off at a Waffle House. We are sitting at the counter and the waitress came over, asked us what we wanted.

I said “What is good today?”

She says, “We have a chicken and egg special.”

So, I asked, “Which comes first?”

To which she replied, “They come together on the same plate.”

Hmmm.. so, the answer is “They both came together.”

So, when faced with a decision on which to make first, the chicken or the egg, make them both and keep them together on the same plate.

Happy Arbor Day (and welcome, Carla!)

Just wanted to post up a quick welcome to our newest fan, Carla Tisdale with the Arbor Day Foundation. She is probably very, very busy right now as today is Arbor Day!! So, Carla and everyone out there planting trees, keep it up. Cause, when you gotta go… and you’re a dog… there better be a tree nearby.

Celebrate Arbor Day and celebrate the future

tree 743116 Celebrate Arbor Day and celebrate the future
I was really bored in the van today as we did a bunch of errands, so I turned the radio up a little louder to listen to the commentary on Arbor Day. Tress are really, really important to us dogs because you never know when you won’t be able to find the next fire plug.

Anyway, the guy on NPR who was speaking said the most insightful thing I have probably ever heard. He said:

“Arbor Day is the only holiday where we celebrate a FUTURE EVENT, instead of a past event.”

Wow! The future event is the tree growing to full-size.

But then, I got to thinking that the tree may grow just a little bit, but hit a drought and die. Or, it could be infested with beetles or some horrible root disease and die. BUT, it could grow tall and strong and provide shade for another puppy on a hot summer day. It could also stretch out its arms and give a child a place to climb or swing. It could also give up a piece of its bark so lovers could carve their initials in a heart, for their kids and grandkids to see and have a story to share.

And all because somebody, somewhere stopped for a few seconds on the last Friday in April to plant a tree.

So, as you go through life, try to find some fertile ground and “plant a tree” each day. You just never know which will grow to be grand.

A tree in full bloom we saw today on our afternoon walk. Too pretty for words, so I will say none.
